RHT Energy Solutions Sponsors Record-Breaking Motorcyclists at Bonneville Salt Flats

John Mills and Don Hildebrand rode a 1975 Honda CB750 sidecar motorcyle to not one but two world records at the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) sanctioned "Bub's Motorcycle Speed Trials" (Aug 30 - Sep 3, 2009) at the Bonneville salt flats in Utah.

John and Don both rode the bike and each set a new record, one in "750 SC AG - 750cc sidecar modified gas" and the other in "750 SC AF - 750cc sidecar modified fuel".   John Mills drove and Don Hildebrand was the "monkey" (sidecar passenger) for the modified gas record, while Don drove and John monkeyed for the modified fuel class record.   The 1975 Honda CB750 is a four-cylinder motorcycle, while the sidecar was originally part of a "trials" sidecar motorcycle.   John prepared the motorcycle for the event and added the sidecar.   The CB750 was bought new in 1976 by Bob Mills (John's father).   Don's father was Adolph, and both Bob and Adolf were born in 1909.   To honor their fathers, John and Don named their race team "Bob and Adolph's Boys Racing".

To pre-qualify for a run for the record at Bonneville, the motorcycle is run for two miles, timed for one mile, and then has two miles to slow back down.   If the one-mile time is good enough that there is a chance for setting a new record, the motorcycle is taken to impound and a request is made to make a run for the record.   The impound staff then applies sealing laquer to the bolts on the engine (so that any modifications will be obvious), and the motorcycle is sent back to the starting point to make the second run.   After the second run the times for runs one and two are averaged, and if a new record is made the motorcycle goes back to impound for tear down.   The engine must be completely removed and then measured by impound staff to verify various internal dimensions.   The tear down of the CB750 took about four hours, as the engine had not been out of the motorcycle since it was installed new 34 years ago!

The record times were just a tad over 84 seconds average for the two runs in both classes.   Congratulations to John and Don!
